# 36-2 The Prestige of Religious Education

FACTS ABOUT RELIGIOUS EDUCATION:

Half of Russians find it difficult to evaluate the prestige of religious universities.
Russians assess most highly the prestige of the Moscow Theological Academy.

From 42% to 52% of Russians find it difficult to evaluate the prestige of religious universities.
However, the largest proportion of high scores (38%) was received by the Moscow Orthodox Theological Academy. The St. Petersburg Theological Academy was in second place and received 35% of the highest ratings. St. Tikhon’s Orthodox University is in third place with 31% of the highest ratings.

Who highly appreciates the prestige of religious universities:

  • Older respondents, compared to younger
  • Respondents with a lower level of education compared to respondents with higher education
  • Respondents with lower levels of income, compared to wealthier respondents
  • Respondents with children compared to childless respondents
  • Residents of Moscow and villages compared to respondents in all other types of settlements

A few facts about the evaluation of religious universities:

Orthodox. Orthodox respondents who belong to the Russian Orthodox Church, assess the prestige of religious universities as somewhat higher than the Russians in general.
Unbelievers. 8% of the non-believing respondents rated the prestige of each of the religious universities at 1 point from possible 8 points.
Voters. Voters. Among the representatives of different political views, the Moscow Orthodox Theological Academy. The St. Petersburg Theological Academy, St. Tikhon’s Orthodox University received the highest ratings from voters for Gennady Zyuganov.
Patriarch. The respondents who trust the Patriarch evaluate the prestige of religious education significantly higher than those who do not trust Kirill. 10% of respondents, who do not trust the Patriarch, assessed the prestige of each of the religious institutions at 1 point.
Church. Those, whose trust the Church in recent years has decreased, are significantly less likely to provide a high rating for religious education, than those whose trust the Church has increased.
Media. Radio audience is slightly more likely than the internet and TV audiences to rate the prestige of religious education higher

The press release is based on the results of a national survey, in which the Russians were asked to rate on a scale from 1 to 8 points, the prestige following religious universities:

  1. Moscow Orthodox Theological Academy
  2. St. Tikhon’s Orthodox University
  3. St. Petersburg Orthodox Theological Academy
